• But now it seemed she would not see or touch it. Rather she would see and touch the King's. The King was a tall, strong man, and likely his was larger than Rolf's. The King was handsome enough, especially for an older man, but he was older even than her father. Rolf was near her same age, only a few months older. It saddened her to think that Rolf now would not be her first.
• Would Rolf even still want her after she'd been spoiled, after she was returned? She knew the King could not keep her against her will for more than a year. Lizzette was resolved that a year would be all the King would have. She would do her duty, but no more. Rolf had been planning to ask her father for her hand, but would he still? Rolf could have any of the girls in the village her age, even some who were older. They all secretly talked about him. They all lusted after him. Would he wait for her for a year? Just waiting until she was 18 had been so hard for him.
• Lizzette felt certain that Madeleine, the dressmaker's daughter, would pursue Rolf very hard. Madeleine was very beautiful, in Lizzette's opinion even more beautiful than herself.
